IP Transit vs Transport

IP transit vs transport services are terms tossed around a lot in the ISP and network worlds, but what do they mean exactly?  Why are the two often mixed up?  Both terms pertain to data transmission and communication, but they operate in distinctive ways.  This article aims to elucidate the dissimilarities between IP transit and IP transport, shedding light on their functionalities and benefits.

IP Transit: Navigating the Digital Highway

IP transit can be likened to a digital highway that facilitates the movement of data packets between various networks. It is a service provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that allows data traffic from one network to traverse their network and access destinations on different networks. This enables seamless global connectivity and efficient data exchange between geographically dispersed networks.

IP transit is analogous to a toll road, where ISPs charge a fee for permitting data packets to traverse their network and reach their intended destinations. This service is particularly valuable for enterprises, data centers, and content providers aiming to establish robust connectivity to a multitude of networks across the internet.

IP Transport: Delivering Data Across a Network

On the other hand, IP transport focuses on the movement of data packets within a single network or between closely connected networks. It involves the physical transmission of data packets from one point to another, often utilizing various technologies like Ethernet, MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), or leased lines. IP transport is like the internal roadways within a city, enabling data to flow efficiently within a confined area.

Unlike IP transit, which involves accessing external networks, IP transport remains confined within a specific network infrastructure. This makes it suitable for businesses seeking to optimize their internal communication and data exchange processes.

Key Differences and Benefits

  1. Scope: IP transit operates on a larger scale, facilitating connectivity between disparate networks globally. IP transport, however, focuses on localized data transmission within or between closely connected networks.
  2. Purpose: IP transit is essential for businesses requiring extensive network reach and interconnectivity. IP transport is beneficial for companies aiming to enhance internal communication and data sharing.
  3. Cost Structure: IP transit typically involves cost based on data volume or bandwidth consumption due to its external network access. IP transport costs are typically fixed, as it primarily deals with internal network transmission.
  4. Performance: IP transit might involve routing complexities as data traverses multiple networks. IP transport, being confined, can offer more predictable and controlled data transmission.

Transport vs Transit Examples:

Dedicated Internet Access

In our DIA Design Guide, we talk about the “loop” and “port”.  The loop is the transport within the network.  IP transit services are available at the port and are transported to a customer’s location via the loop.

Layer 2 Services

Layer 2 services such as an EPL or EVPL would be considered transport.  They transport packets within a network but do not transit between networks.  At Full Span Solutions we often get a lot of quote requests for L2 transport services through our quoting tool.

SD-WAN Underlay

In an SD-WAN network, the site-to-site traffic is encrypted and transported between sites on an underlay service such as MPLS, DIA or business broadband.  Because these services transport the tunneled overlay traffic, they are considered the transport.

IP Transit Services

An ISP network will peer with numerous upstream service providers.  These providers could offer a direct route to a destination, or they could be just one step along the way.  An IP transit network will connect multiple networks together giving this ISP the ability to pass along traffic it doesn’t otherwise know what to do with.  The transit network will ultimately have a path to the destination or send it on to another network that will.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the distinction between IP transit and IP transport is paramount to understanding networks. While IP transit serves as a gateway to global connectivity, IP transport optimizes localized data transmission within networks.

Still, have questions?  We can help!  Connect with us to talk through all your IP transit, transport, and other connectivity questions!

Introduction to Wavelength Services:

In today’s fast-paced world, where data rules supreme, businesses and organizations are constantly on the hunt for solutions that can keep up with the escalating demands for high-speed and secure data transfer. One such innovative solution that has emerged as a game-changer in the telecommunications industry are Wavelength Services. In this article, we will explore the ins and outs of wavelengths, their benefits, and why they are becoming a go-to option for data-intensive enterprises.

What are Wavelength Services?

Wavelength services, also known as “wavelength” or “lambda” services, refer to a high-performance optical networking solution that facilitates the transport of vast amounts of data over long distances at lightning-fast speeds. The fundamental principle behind this technology is to allocate an individual wavelength of light within a fiber optic cable to transmit data. Each wavelength acts as a dedicated channel, allowing data to travel without interference from other signals, ensuring a secure and efficient data transfer.

How Do Wavelength Services Work?

Wavelength circuits operate on Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, which enables multiple wavelengths of light to be combined and transmitted simultaneously over a single fiber optic cable. These wavelengths can carry enormous amounts of data, and with the right infrastructure, data rates of up to several terabits per second can be achieved.

At the transmitting end, data from various sources are aggregated and converted into optical signals. These signals are then assigned specific wavelengths and combined using DWDM. The fiber optic cables then carry these wavelength-division multiplexed signals over vast distances. At the receiving end, the optical signals are demultiplexed to separate the individual wavelengths, and the data is converted back into its original form.

Advantages of Wavelength Services

a) Blazing-Fast Speeds:

A wavelength can provide unparalleled data transfer speeds, making them ideal for data-heavy applications such as cloud computing, video streaming, and large-scale data backups. These services eliminate bottlenecks and ensure that data reaches its destination swiftly.

b) Scalability:

As bandwidth demands increase, wavelengths services can easily scale up to accommodate these needs. Since each wavelength operates as a separate channel, additional wavelengths can be added without disrupting existing services.

c) Enhanced Security:

The dedicated nature of each wavelength ensures that sensitive data remains isolated from other traffic on the network, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and cyber threats.  Need even more security?  Some of our provider partners have options to encrypt wavelength circuits as well!

d) Low Latency:

In sectors where real-time data processing is critical, such as financial trading or telemedicine, low latency is essential. Wavelength services offer minimal latency, ensuring that data travels with minimal delay.

e) Reliability:

A wavelength circuit can be designed as “protected” to achieve redundancy and fault tolerance.  Wavelengths deliver exceptional reliability when properly designed. Enterprises can trust these services for their mission-critical operations and the Full Span Solutions team is here to help!

Use Cases of Wavelength Services

a) Data Centers and Cloud Service Providers:

Wavelengths empower data centers and cloud service providers to handle the immense data flows generated by their clients. They can efficiently transport massive data transfers, offering customers the best possible performance.

b) Telecommunications Providers:

Telecommunication companies utilize wavelengths to bolster their network infrastructure backbones, enabling faster and more reliable internet connectivity for consumers and businesses alike.

c) Research and Education:

Wavelength services play a vital role in supporting research institutions and universities where vast amounts of data need to be shared among collaborators globally.

d) Media and Entertainment:

In the media industry, where high-quality video streaming and content delivery are paramount, wavelength services ensure seamless data transmission, enhancing user experience.

Conclusion

As the world becomes increasingly data-driven, the demand for high-speed, secure, and reliable data transfer solutions continues to surge. Wavelength services, with their unmatched capabilities in terms of speed, scalability, and security, are revolutionizing the telecommunications landscape. Whether it’s for enterprises handling enormous data volumes or industries reliant on real-time information, wavelength services are proving to be a game-changer. Embracing this cutting-edge technology is undoubtedly a strategic move that can propel businesses forward in the digital age.

Proudly Serving WISPs!

WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Providers) are typically small businesses on the connectivity frontiers providing connectivity where the big carriers are unwilling or unable to build cost-effective networks.  Here at Full Span Solutions, we are not only proud to serve the WISP community but we excel at it!

Challenges

WISP Operators face several challenges.  First, they often operate in bandwidth-sparse areas of the country.  An upstream fiber connection is hard to come by.  Additionally, the connectivity is often much more expensive than what is otherwise available in a data center or another on-net building.

wisp tower site fiber map
WISP Tower Sites are mapped together with Fiber Assets

Second, a WISP will build it’s network on wireless towers.  While some tower sites may be lit by a fiber provider for cellular, broadcast, or other existing communications services it can be difficult to track down which provider actually services that site.

Finally, WISP sites are often not USPS-addressed sites.  Again, they could be towers far off the main road, grain silos, water towers and other structures that lend themselves to line of site wireless but are often hard to find on a map by address.  Of course, most service providers prefer to deliver to a service address versus a set of coordinates.

Full Span Solutions Engineering

With our extensive set of fiber route maps, we have the greatest chance of finding a connectivity provider for those hard-to-reach WISP sites.  Additionally, our datasets include all FCC-registered tower structures and antenna sites.  With this data, we overlay fiber maps and can easily help narrow the search for tower sites that are well-connected.  Armed with this information WISP operators can begin designing their networks with both tower reach and connectivity sources in mind.

In addition to our advanced serviceability data we can also work with our WISP customers on customized solutions including point-to-multi-point site aggregation, hand hole and splice case meet points, dark fiber leases and IRU agreements, and much more.  Our team’s experience in network engineering as well as our extensive network of providers makes Full Span Solutions a great partner for the complex connectivity needs of your WISP!

Finally, if you need additional technical assistance with your WISP network we have partnered with WISP engineering firms for consulting and engineering services as well.  Contact us with questions about serviceability and customized solutions to suit your WISP’s needs!

EPL vs. EVPL Ethernet Circuits

Ethernet circuits are widely used in modern networking, providing high-speed connectivity for businesses across the globe. Two common variations of Ethernet services are Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL). In this article, we delve into the dissimilarities between these two types of circuits, shedding light on their unique characteristics and helping you make informed decisions for your networking requirements.

What is an EPL?

Ethernet Private Line (EPL) is a dedicated point-to-point Ethernet connection between two locations. It offers a secure and reliable link with high bandwidth capacity, ensuring optimal performance for businesses that require exclusive connectivity. EPL connections are typically provisioned over fiber optic infrastructure and provide a layer 2 connection, allowing for seamless data transmission between geographically dispersed sites.

Understanding EVPL

Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) is a flexible and cost-effective Ethernet service that enables multiple sites to connect through a centralized shared network port. Each individual connection is segmented with its over 802.1q VLAN tag.  This adds segmentation which is what makes EVPL circuits capable of providing secure, high-performance throughput while optimizing bandwidth usage and keeping costs down.

Differentiating Factors

a. Scalability:

EPL is designed for dedicated point-to-point connections, making it suitable for businesses with specific requirements for individual connections between locations. In contrast, EVPL offers scalability by allowing multiple sites to share a common network infrastructure, making it ideal for organizations that need to connect several branches or locations.

b. Cost Efficiency:

EVPL offers a more cost-effective solution, as it utilizes a shared network infrastructure, reducing the overall expenses associated with dedicated connections. On the other hand, EPL is tailored for businesses that prioritize exclusive connectivity, which can result in higher costs.

c. Flexibility:

EVPL provides greater flexibility in terms of adding or removing locations within the network, making it easier to accommodate changes in business needs. EPL, being a point-to-point connection, requires a more structured setup and may not be as adaptable to dynamic network changes.

Choosing the Right Option:

Selecting between EPL and EVPL depends on the specific requirements of your business. If you need dedicated, high-performance connections between individual locations, EPL is the preferred choice. However, if your organization seeks a cost-effective solution for connecting multiple sites while optimizing bandwidth, EVPL is a more suitable option. Of course Full Span Solutions is here to help evaluate your organization’s needs to determine the most appropriate Ethernet circuit for your business.

Conclusion:

In summary, EPL and EVPL Ethernet circuits offer distinct advantages for businesses seeking reliable, high-speed connectivity. Understanding the differences in scalability, cost efficiency, and flexibility will enable you to make an informed decision that aligns with your organization’s networking requirements.

You still have questions about EPL vs EVPL Ethernet circuits?  Let’s get connected!

There are many different types of Wide Area Network (WAN) services available on the market today. The two most fundamental service categories are dark and lit fiber services. Both have their own pros and cons, but these differences typically help narrow down the options fairly quickly. In this blog post, we will compare and contrast dark fiber vs lit fiber WAN services, so that you can make an informed decision about which one is best for your business!

Dark Fiber vs Lit Fiber Service Availability

Lit fiber services are significantly more available than dark fiber services. Dark Fiber requires an end-to-end fiber path while lit services can make many hops through active equipment and even span multiple service provider networks. This makes dark fiber a better choice for businesses and ISPs that need large amounts of bandwidth in a relatively small geographic area. This area, of course, needs to be completely covered by that single service provider who can deliver the dark fiber service end to end. Lit services on the other hand can be built with last-mile connectivity from a separate provider on each end if required.

Types of Services

Point to Point

Dark Fiber is always a point-to-point connection between two locations. It can be used to connect commercial buildings, data centers, remote network cabinets, and wireless tower sites. The customer will provide every active network component to drive this data service. The service provider will provide repair services but because they have no real visibility of the circuit itself they do not provide monitoring and other advanced technical services.

Lit services can be provided as point-to-point services as well. A lit service does not require an end-to-end fiber path, however. The data signals can travel over multiple active equipment hops and even span multiple service provider networks if required. This type of connectivity often provides the best combination of flexibility and price.

Point to Multi-Point

Dark Fiber is a point-to-point connection so it cannot be used for point-to-multi-point connectivity. A point-to-multi-point connection is what you would order to connect to multiple locations to a single hub location. Dark Fiber is not an option for this type of service. Instead, service providers will build ethernet-based services over their existing networks to implement the service in full. Point to multipoint services go by several names such as E-LAN and Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) amount others.

Capacity / Bandwidth

Dark Fiber has the ability to support very high bandwidth capacity because it is an end-to-end connection with no active equipment in the middle. Dark Fiber can support data rates up to 100 Gbps and beyond. Really the limiting factor is the equipment the customer puts on either end. Lit fiber services also have the ability to support high bandwidth capacities, but because they use active equipment along the path that bandwidth may come at a higher cost or with some limitations.

Distance

Dark Fiber can span only medium distances, up to a few dozen Kilometers, without active repeater equipment along the path. A service provider offering a lit service will already have this network infrastructure in place. Your WAN service will ride over this existing network with modulation technology to optimize the link utilization from city to city or even further making the possibilities nearly endless.

Cost

Of course, a very important aspect in deciding which way to go is the cost. With dark fiber services, it can be difficult to price generally because of a number of factors. In this case, let’s assume the connectivity is across town between data centers. This might be fairly inexpensive. There is no active equipment for the service provider to supply and the fiber route itself is easy to maintain. Alternatively lit services in data centers are typically the best buy for the money as well. At Sure Fiber we typically suggest letting the technical and business requirements drive the conversation first and often this helps determine what solution to focus on.

Dedicated Internet Access Design Guide

Dedicated internet access, or a DIA, is designed and implemented in a few different ways from an IP addressing perspective. Business and technical needs dictate how the DIA is configured. Most service providers will offer configurable options as part of the design and installation process. The team here at Full Span Solutions will happily work with you to engineer and implement the right design.

DIA Components

First, it’s important to understand the basic components of a Dedicated Internet Access Design. There will be a service provider router that will serve as the default gateway for your DIA connection. Service provider networks are all structured differently, which is summarized with the service provider cloud on the right side of Figure 1 below. To connect to the service provider network, you need an access network. Access networks can also vary in design, but you can think of this as the connection path back to the service provider’s core network. The yellow line depicts this in Figure 1. Sometimes you will hear this connection called the “access” or the “loop.” The loop is then connected to a “port,” which sets your connection’s speed. Think of it as a physical port your connection is connected to at the service provider. Each component can be priced separately. However, this may or may not be visible on a quote to you as a customer. In a data center where you are cross-connecting directly, there are typically no access or loop costs, only a port fee. This is one of the reasons data center connectivity is less expensive.

Full Span Solutions can help demystify service provider quotes and invoices, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you have questions about anything you have today or are considering for the future.

DIA Managed Router

Direct Internet Access Design will also vary when it comes to the terminating router, either customer or service-provider-managed. Most service providers will offer a managed router as an option. Utilizing a provider-managed router has many benefits. However, savvy IT departments often manage their own as an alternative. The customer network then sits behind this router. If the service provider doesn’t provide a routing device, they often will have a simple, transparent, or bridging device to monitor the basics of the connection. This could be a switch or a purpose-built Network Interface Device (NID). Because this is a discussion about IP routing (layer 3), we have omitted the NID and other transport components to simplify the drawings.

Single IP Address DIA

The first and most simplistic DIA design is to have a single IP address assigned to the customer router or firewall, which then performs network address translation (NAT) for the customer’s end users.  All customers’ IP address space is private and usable only within that organization’s internal network. The customer will configure the router or firewall with a default route toward the service provider over the DIA.  The service provider network will already have the needed routes and network availability to reach the Internet, as shown in Figure 2. Typically, this design is excellent for a branch office with general cloud access needs. A DIA configuration like this would also be suitable for transport for an SD-WAN network.

DIA with a Block of Leased IP Addresses

Another IP addressing design option is for the service provider to issue a block of public IP addresses to the customer for use with their DIA service. There will be a dedicated IP subnet between the customer router and the service provider in the example above. However, the service provider also includes a block of addresses the customer assigns behind their router.   These addresses are assigned to multiple firewalls or servers so the customer can offer public-facing internet services such as VPN, a website, email, etc. The cost to lease addresses from a service provider for a configuration like this is typically a few dollars more a month per IP address. The example below shows that 203.0.113.0/24 is the address space leased to the customer.

Single DIA with BGP Peering

Similar to the previous example, a customer who owns their own block of IP addresses can also use them with a DIA connection. The primary difference would be that they use BGP for advertising these addresses to the internet over the DIA. This is typically most common in larger enterprises, universities, and ISPs. Larger blocks of IP addresses are available from ARIN if the organization can justify the need for this IP address space. IP addresses allocated directly to an organization by ARIN are portable to another provider, so this configuration has more flexibility. The configuration in figure 4 shows the 203.0.113.0/24 address space as advertised to the service provider via a BGP session.

Figure 4. DIA with customer-owned IP addresses and a BGP routing session to the service provider.

Multiple DIAs with BGP Peering

BGP allows an organization to advertise its IP addresses over more than one service provider. This creates redundancy so that a single service provider outage will not cause an outage for that customer. When ordering separate DIA circuits, it’s important to ensure they are geographically diverse to get the most value from this type of configuration. Full Span Solutions has fiber route maps from hundreds of providers to help ensure redundancy is achieved. With the connections established, each provider will provide internet routing information over its respective link with a BGP session. This can be a simple default route, the entire internet routing table, or some hybrid of the two, as shown in Figure 5 below. The customer’s address space, 203.0.113.0/24, is being advertised over BGP sessions with both carriers and, without additional BGP manipulation, will be visible on the internet through both links.
